The Patriarchal Cathedral Basilica of Saint Mark, or simply, Saint Mark’s Basilica, is one of the most remarkable and certainly, familiar landmarks in all of Italy. First built in the late 11th century, the present structure as we know it today dates back to the year 1617. A peerless amalgam of Byzantine and Gothic design, the cathedral’s exterior is replete with exquisite sculptures, bas-relief scenes and mosaics. The interior is no less brilliant and contains additional mosaics in bronze, gold and stone and the masterpiece Pala d’Oro high altar retable.

Basilica San Marco is a 2.4 km walk from Venezia Santa Lucia railway station.
The cathedral is open throughout the year, with entrance fees to access the interior of the basilica, as well as the bell tower adjacent to Piazza San Marco.
