The National Portrait Gallery
The National Portrait Gallery is too often ignored in favor of the National Gallery next door. This museum recounts Britain’s development through portraits of its main characters, giving faces to names which are familiar from the history books. There are pictures of kings, queens, poets, musicians, artists, thinkers, heroes, and villains from all periods since the late 14th century. Ondaatje Wing
The National Portrait Gallery’s millennium development project, the new Ondaatje Wing, opened in May 2000, allowing it 50% more exhibition and public space. It includes a Tudor Gallery, displaying some of the earliest and most important paintings, including one of Shakespeare, and the portrait of Elizabeth I. A new balcony provides an extra display area for portraits from the 1960s and 1990s.
Facilities in the National Portrait Gallery
The Gallery has a new rooftop restaurant and a spacious lecture theatre in the basement that is also used for drama and movie events. The National Portrait Gallery also houses temporary exhibitions and has an excellent shop selling books on art and literature, as well as a range of cards, prints and posters featuring pictures from the main collection.
Admission and Hours
The National Portrait Gallery is open Saturday through Wednesday from 10am – 6pm and Thursday and Friday from 10am – 9pm. It is closed on major national holidays. There is no admission cost for the Gallery.
