Natural History Museum Guide

The museum is divided into three sections, the Blue Zone, the Green Zone, and the Red Zone. An 85-ft skeleton of the dinosaur Diplodocus dominates the central hall in the Blue Zone – Human Biology, together with Mammals and Dinosaurs, are to the left of the hall, while Creepy Crawlies and Ecology are to the right. The Mammals exhibit displays a lifesize model of a blue whale in the gallery. The Dinosaurs exhibit is home to the T Rex, one of the museum’s impressively lifelike animatronic models.

On the second floor the Origin of Species and Minerals and Meteorites are found. The giant escalator in Visions of Earth leads through a stunning globe to Green Zone highlighting the Power Within, the gallery’s convincing earthquake simulator, and Earth’s Treasury, showcasing thousands of gems, rocks, and minerals.

Kids’ Favorites

The Natural History Museum is a fun place to take the kids. Ages 7 to 14 can visit Investigate, a science lab specifically designed for kids to touch and hold specimens, use the microscopes, and the Museum’s computer database.

Kids under seven years old can get a free Explorer’s Backpack that comes with a hat, binoculars, and coloring books and activities to entertain the little ones. There are plenty of hands-on events at the museum, so it’s a great way to get kids excited about and learn about their world.

Natural History Museum Hours and Admission

The Museum is open Monday through Saturday 10am – 5:50pm and Sundays 11am – 5:50pm, closing only for Christmas holiday. There is no admission charge for the Natural History Museum.
