The immense landmark is a superb exemplar of Norman fortress architecture and dominates the north bank of the River Thames. Built at the behest of William the Conqueror in 1078, the White Tower is a venerable symbol of London. The austere castle compound consists of several inherent landmarks within two concentric stone walls. The Tower has held many functions throughout history, notably as a zoo, prison, Royal Mint, government office, observatory and most famously, as the official home of the Crown Jewels since 1303. A frequent backdrop in fiction, from William Shakespeare’s Richard III to Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Yeomen of the Guard, the Tower of London is a definite must-see point of interest.
Vitals and Tips
The Tower of London is open every day of the year, with the exception of December 24, 25, 26 and January 1. Comprehensive tours take up to three hours.
The Tower of London operates several cafés and restaurants.
The landmark is easily accessible by tube, bus, light railway, train or riverboat.
