The walls of Westminster Abbey resonate with history. The foundation of the original abbey dates back to the 7th century and since the year 1066, every British coronation has taken place at Westminster. The burials and monuments in the Abbey’s Poets’ Corner amount to a veritable who’s who of literary giants. Of those interred in the South Transept of the Abbey, some of the most notable include Chaucer, Dickens, Dryden, Kipling and Tennyson. A museum is located in one of the oldest sections of the abbey, within a glorious 11th century chamber that dates back to the very foundation of the church.
Vitals and Tips
Westminster Abbey is open every day of the year except for Sundays and religious holidays, when the church is open for worship only.
Admission to the museum is free with a ticket to Westminster Abbey.
Christmas services at Westminster Abbey are especially popular. While tickets are not required, worshippers are encouraged to arrive well in advance in order to ensure a place.
