Warrington Rundown

Warrington began life as part of Lancashire, but in 1974 was formally declared part of the New Borough of Warrington in Cheshire, having been designated a New Town in 1968. The armies of Oliver Cromwell and the Earl of Derby stationed themselves here, and Cromwell’s Cottage is where he was believed to have stayed. Armed forces once again came to Warrington during the Second World War, when Burtonwood RAF base became the largest US Army Air Force base outside the United States, making it quite the celeb hangout with Humphrey Bogart and Bob Hope paying a visit to cheer up GIs. Famous Warringtonians include cheeky chappie George Formby, Tim Curry (just a sweet transvestite) and DJ Chris Evans.

Despite its close proximity to some of the biggest retail outlets in the UK, Warrington holds its own with a huge out of town Retail Park, Gemini. Rugby league is the premier sport – the Warrington Wolves having moved to the new Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Warrington Events

There’s fun for everyone at Warrington’s Stockton Heath Festival in May. Four days of live music, comedy theatre and live music.

Walton Hall Gardens in Warrington hosts a Country Fayre in September with crafts, funfair and authentic re-enactments abound.

Warrington’s Runcorn Festival in July has a lovely local feel with a colourful parade, morris dancers, marching bands and of course the crowning of the carnival queen.

The motor-mad should head to the Classic Transport show in July. With over 100 vintage vehicles from Ford Prefects to classic Cadillacs, this is Warrington’s premier car event.

Get a pint of ‘Wobbly Bob’ beer down you at the Oktoberfest in (you guessed it) October. There are plenty of other events at Warrington’s brilliant real ale festival.

The Warrington Music Festival takes place in July for eight days of gigs all over town plus a grand finale that transforms the marketplace with a big stage and live bands.

There’s gourmet grub aplenty at Warrington’s Arts Celebration Day in July. Fun for all with music, dance, arts and crafts.

Join 40,000 party people and world class DJs for three days of dance and music mayhem at the legendary Creamfields festival in August.

5^th November is Bonfire Night so wrap up warm and get down to Halton Fireworks Festival, Warrington’s best display of pyrotechnic wizardry.

Unlock your creative side at the Arts Celebration Day in July. This Warrington event gives you music, dance, plus arts and crafts.

When to Go

· Warrington is located in the Northwest of the UK, and as such tends to have colder winters than parts of the south. However, like the rest of the country there are no huge variations in temperatures throughout the year, and the town has plenty of fine sunny days.

· Average temperatures during the summer months of July and August are 19°C, and in the winter temperatures drop to between 2°C at night and rise to around 7°C during the daytime. Temps can, however drop much lower during a cold snap.

· Warrington experiences its fair share of rainy day, with the least rain falling during February to May, and the most during November and December.

Getting There

· Warrington has two railway stations, Bank Quay which has a direct service to London Euston, and Central which is on the Liverpool to Manchester line.

· The town is close to the M62, M6 and M56 motorways, and is around 194 miles from London. Arriva and National Express run a frequent, cheap intercity service between Warrington and most major UK destinations.

· Warrington is midway between Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Manchester International Airport. An airlink service runs from both airports into Warrington centre.
